If you need a gaming console for the whole family, the Nintendo Switch is a solid choice, especially considering the wide variety of games the device offers. There are many single-player games on the Switch, but there are also plenty of family-friendly titles. The Switch Sports and Kirby collections are great for collaboration. More competitive games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. also lend themselves to surprisingly fast-paced combat. There are also some strategy games, including Advance Wars.
Assuming you only have one Switch, here are the best multiplayer games worth playing as a family. We will keep you informed when new games are available. Keep in mind this is a list specifically for games on the same Switch that are good for family multiplayer. Check out our list of the best Nintendo Switch games for more tips. If you want to play multiplayer games in the same room, make sure your Switch can connect to the TV. Like the original TV-connected Switch, the latest OLED-screen Switch is a better home option than the smaller Switch Lite, which only works in handheld mode and doesn’t have useful shareable Joy-Con controllers. (Switch Lite owners can play multiplayer games, but you have to buy extra controllers and squeeze around the tiny screen.)

Advanced Warfare 1+2: Retraining Camp
Anyone who played a Game Boy Advance long ago will have fond memories of Advance Wars. For everyone else: Think military strategy games like Nintendo’s Fire Emblem, but with tanks, soldiers, and helicopters. Nintendo’s remakes of the first two Advance Wars games feel more like strategy board games on the Switch, almost like the ones you play in Nintendo’s excellent compilation Clubhouse Games. This turn-based game has a strong focus on strategic planning, and can easily involve multiple players simultaneously through a single Switch. It is also possible to create new maps that offer high replay value. Yes, it’s a war game, but the action is cartoony and there’s no real violence other than explosions. Its gameplay is more like the animated version of “Risk”.
Kirby Returns to Dreamland Deluxe Edition
There are tons of Kirby games on Switch. The pink transforming puffball is the perfect replacement for Mario, offering a less challenging gameplay for kids who might find the Mario games a little too challenging. This 2D game is a remake of the Wii classic, with vastly improved graphics and a bunch of fun, competitive (but not too intense) mini-games. There’s a lot to do, and up to four players can play simultaneously in co-op mode. This replaces our previous suggestion of Kirby: Star Allies, another excellent 2D Kirby game, and a good alternative. But if you want a better Kirby game (which is also harder), buy Kirby and the Forgotten Lands.

Do you remember the Wii movement? It’s back, and six dynamic motion-controlled games on Switch Sports make it a lot of fun for two to four players connected to a TV in the same room. You should definitely use a TV-connected Switch with this device, and remember that Switch Sports isn’t a game meant to be played handheld on the go (although you’ll be sitting at the Switch screen and using the Joy-Con controllers) and can Play). This great 3D platformer is full of secrets, fun powers, and the difficulty level is still not that high. Subsequently, the bonus levels increase to some surprisingly difficult levels. I’d put Forgotten Lands first, but Fantasy Lands Deluxe is also worth considering.
